Do you remember last year, when we decided that the pandemic affected grades too much? The school district decided to freeze grades, as of Q3.  So, I realize some of you have been working your tails off and have a very good score in my class.  I just printed out grades as of 2:45 and I would be ok freezing your grades right as they are.  What I would like you to do is answer the question, "Do you want me to freeze your grade, so that means whatever grade you have now, regardless of what you do going forward, would be the grade you would end the year with. In addition, you can add to the grade going forward, would you want to do that?  Or, if you have some alternate solution, please also let me know.  Thanks for your time and all your hard work this year!

People can work in pairs or individually as long as all the parts of the project get done. If one person is doing all the work, then that one person will get all the points so just do your part. If someone insists on working alone, more than one story or current event can be done so that everyone in the group has his or her own video or slides. IF there is any evidence of plagiarism from the internet or otherwise, your section will not be accepted (0%). If you look at a source, cite it to cover your bases. Wikipedia is not a credible source and will not be accepted as proof of originality. Everyone needs to speak in order to get the points for this project. Your warm up for today has to do with the compare and contrast essays. We have two great examples of what your classmates are doing in other classes, please follow directions and add to the document to show your understanding.

With a group of 4 others in class, summarize "Four Freedoms" or "Inaugural Address," one reading from page 259 (starting with Malala and ending with Credo: What I Believe) and "Born Free", "We Are All Born Free", our class novel or one of the assigned articles in NewsELA or your current event. Your video should include a summary, one good quote and explain the quote and answer the question "What is the relationship between power and freedom" One person in the group will make a video based on the way the group members answered the question, and say "Based on what my group members read and my opinion, this is how my group answers the question "What is the relationship between power and freedom."

Lastly, everyone should be making a video and commenting on other students in class, his or her video. Please be kind, we are all new at this.

I am also including a list of Make Up journals to supplement your grade. Please DO NOT do journals that you have already done. This is for people who have missing journals, I won't give extra credit to those who have complete points in journals.

We are doing study guide questions for Chapters 1-8 and a Writing Activity for one of those sections.

About every other week, we will have a different current event. Current events are good to relate back to your projects which will be at the end of the unit( hint hint). For the first one, choose one of the templates to use with an article on NewsELA. Next time, you will need to choose another credible news source.

You should be reading the class book, (Night per. 1 and 6 and Frankenstein per. 2,3,4). If you choose to read something else, you will lose 1/2 the points.

You are comparing and contrasting the two speeches by Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms"(269) and John F. Kennedy's "Inaugural Address" (283). It would be a good idea to include these elements...
Tips for your essay: After you gather your evidence (quotes) , write your thesis.
A thesis should not be a fact it should be a statement you can prove with facts, evidence and quotes. Might be a good idea to do Jane Schaffer, You should mention the rhetorical devices or if both speeches were persuasive but did they do it in different ways(?)or the same ways...maybe mention ethos, pathos, logos....(find examples) Charged Language? Parallelism? Appeals to? A lot to consider, show me your learning.
If you are doing the Speaking and Listening option, make sure you are cleared or OK'd by me before you turn it in, or else I will consider it late.
