Due:
1. Read one of your peers' storybooks.
2. Next, in MLA format, type a half-page reflection on a Google Doc, explaining what you thought the author did well and what you thought they could have improved, and why. Then, speculate how this book may impact a child's understanding and perception of the world religion the storybook explores. Be sure to identify the author of the storybook and their topic.
3. Repeat steps one and two for someone else's storybook. This portion of the assignment should be at least a half-page page.
4. Next, type a one-page reflection about your research and story. Consider the following questions to help guide your thinking, though you may answer other questions related to your reflection instead:
-What was the most significant challenge you faced as you conducted your research and wrote your story, and why? Did you overcome that challenge? If so, how so? If not, why not?
-If you had more time, in what ways would you further improve your story, and why?
-What are your strengths or weaknesses as a storyteller and a researcher, and how did these strengths or weaknesses help or hinder you throughout this assignment?
-What was your favorite or least favorite part of this assignment? Why?
-Why did you choose to write the story that you wrote? What about it appealed to you?
-Would others be interested in reading your story? Why or why not?
5. Altogether, your assignment must be typed in MLA format, must be at least two pages long, and must be submitted by the end of the class period. A Works Cited page does not need to be included with this assignment.

Your task is to write and illustrate a storybook in which the protagonist learns about a key aspect of a major religion. See the attached instructions for details, and the attached link for an example of what can be created using StoryJumper's tools. Be sure to use the free resources available through our school's library when you conduct your research -- they can be quite useful in this situation. When you submit your assignment, post one link to your storybook in the private comments section and another link in the class comments section. This way, I can easily locate your storybook and your peers can read your story as well.
Due:
1. Research a primal religion of your choice and learn about that religion's people, their customs, myths, and beliefs.
2. Next, use all that you learned from your research to create a colorful and catchy full-page advertisement for that primal religion. The advertisement can be drawn by hand or created using digital tools.
3. In a half page, share what you learned from your research, and then explain how that information influenced the way you designed the primal religion's advertisement.
4. Your work must be in MLA format, but a Works Cited page is not required. The quality and depth of your work will determine the score your assignment receives. As usual, go beyond the obvious.

Due:
Imagine civilization has been destroyed and that the human survivors turn once more to religion in the absence of scientific knowledge. In your opinion, what would a primal religion in post-apocalyptic North America look like? Which animals or natural elements would be venerated, and which would be feared? Why? Make an educated guess about the kinds of rituals, traditions, and taboos that would emerge from this new primal religion.
Due:
1. Using the internet, research two historical religious figures: one from an Eastern culture, and one from an era that preceded Jesus'. These religious figures must not have been mentioned in the parts of Smith's book we've read so far. Paraphrase your findings from the internet. This portion of the assignment should be at least a half page.
2. Next, identify and analyze what Jesus and the two historical religious figures you researched have in common with one another. This portion of the assignment should be at least one page. Continue to paraphrase as you compare all three people.
3. You must research at least two credible sources. Smith's book does not count. In order to give credit where credit is due, include in-text citations every time you paraphrase information from one of your sources. This will help distinguish your own commentary from that of the sources you researched.
4. Your work must be 1.5 pages (minimum), typed in MLA format, and include a Works Cited page. Please look at the MLA format resources I reposted earlier this semester if you need to review.

From the video: "Jesus’s point is that the surest way to be kind is not to take pride in never having done a particular species of wrong. It lies in seeing that, inevitably, we too have been foolish and cruel at other moments, and in using that knowledge to foster compassion towards those whom it lies in our powers to ‘stone.’"
What are your thoughts about the aforementioned idea? Do you agree or disagree with it? Why? Briefly describe a time in your life or in someone else's when this principle was applicable.

Now that you've finished reading and studying Night, you will further your understanding of the Holocaust and its many victims by reading the coming-of-age story of one of the thirteen holocaust survivors featured on the linked website. It’s up to you to decide whose story you’re going to read, but each one is told in only five chapters, chronicling that person’s life before, during, and after the holocaust. Be sure to watch the accompanying YouTube videos for greater insight into that person’s experiences.
After reading Night and the story of one of the survivors of your choice, you will use the free tools provided by Adobe Spark (also linked below) to create a symbolic collage. The collage must symbolize both Eliezer’s life and the life of the survivor whose story you read. At minimum, the collage must feature ten symbols: five for Elie and five for the other person. The symbols you include must signify some important aspect of that person’s character or life experience. Experiment with all the Adobe Spark tools at your disposal to enliven your work.
Once your collage is complete, you must then record a Zoom video ( roughly 5-10 minutes) and fully address the following topics in the order listed:
1) Symbols: For each symbol, identify to whom it is related, what it represents, and its significance to that person’s character or life experience.
2) Differences and Similarities: Demonstrate your understanding of Wiesel’s story and the story of the other person by articulating key differences and similarities between the two people. Detail at least four differences and four similarities.
3) The Moral: Explain what you believe is the most important lesson Night imparts to its readers, and why; do the same for the other person's story. Defend all your opinions with textual evidence.
Upload two links to this assignment post: One for your Zoom presentation, and one for your symbolic collage.

Due:
1. First, finish reading parts 1 and 2 (pages 13-37) of Night.
2. When used as a supplement for your learning rather than a substitute for your learning, websites like Shmoop and SparkNotes can be quite useful. That's why I'm linking the following page to this assignment. You've already read its "Night Introduction" and "What is Night About and Why Should I Care?" sections. Now, in the resources section, watch the "One on One" video and the speech entitled "The Perils of Indifference."
3. After that, on a Google Doc, type an MLA-formatted, double-spaced response (one page minimum) to the following questions:
-What in your life are you indifferent about, and why?
-Type a quote from the "One on One" interview that resonated with you. Explain the quote's significance to you and how it applies to your own life.
-Consider the content of Wiesel's "Perils of Indifference" speech and type a quote from the speech that resonated with you. Like before, explain the quote's significance to you and how it applies to your own life. Then, reflect on the past consequences or potential consequences of your own indifference.
-Finally, think back to one of the issues you learned about from your peers' Human Rights Violation projects and contemplate the role indifference played in perpetuating that particular issue.
A Works Cited page is not required, nor is weaving, but again the work must be completed in MLA format. The quality and depth of your responses will determine the score your assignment earns.

I believe self reflection is incredibly important and that many of us (myself included) ought to do it more often. To that end, I would like you to answer the following questions because they will require you to think carefully about what motivates you and the type of intelligence you believe is strongest within you:
1. Inside or outside of school, what best motivates you to learn a new skill or concept?
2. Intrinsic motivation is akin to self-motivation: You pursue a course of action because you want to. What intrinsically motivates you, and what has your intrinsic motivation helped you accomplish?
3. Extrinsic motivation is motivation that is fueled by some kind of external reward, like money or recognition. What extrinsically motivates you, and what notable accomplishments have you achieved because of extrinsic motivation?
4. Multiple Intelligences theory suggests that there are eight different kinds of intelligence, all of which are present within us to varying degrees. The eight kinds of intelligence are: Linguistic ("word smart"), Logical-Mathematical ("number/reasoning smart"), Spatial ("picture smart"), Bodily-Kinesthetic ("body smart"), Musical ("music smart"), Interpersonal ("people smart"), Intrapersonal ("self smart"), and Naturalist ("nature smart"). Which of the eight intelligences is strongest within you, and why? Inside or outside of school, how does this kind of intelligence help you learn new skills or concepts? What is the most significant lesson, skill, or concept you've learned because of this type of intelligence? See the linked website for more information about each intelligence type featured in Multiple Intelligences theory.

What did this assignment and discussion teach you about yourself and the characters from Lord of the Flies? How do the two worlds, yours and theirs, connect?
Due:
1. After viewing the sample priority totem, identify and then consider your five most important priorities. Rank them from most to least important. Then create a priority totem like the one in the attached picture by drawing and coloring symbols for each of your five priorities. The totem should be drawn on the left side of your paper.
2. Pick a character from Lord of the Flies and then, repeating the process described in step 1, create a priority totem for them. The character's priority totem should be drawn and colored on the left side of your paper, underneath the one you drew for yourself.
3. On the right side of your paper, explain what each symbol represents and why those priorities are important to you. Repeat the process for your chosen character. Finally, compare and contrast your priorities with those of your chosen character. This written portion of the assignment should be on the right side of your paper.
4. Your grade will be determined by the depth and quality of your insights, as well as by the degree of effort devoted to this analytical piece.

On a Google Doc, type a one-page, double-spaced rationale for your first semester grade. It is entirely up to you how you compose this rationale, but it would be a good idea to provide evidence to support whatever claims you make about your performance or learning. Please note, however, that I will not read anything past the first page, nor will I read any work submitted past the deadline.
For this optional assignment, your goal is to type a persuasive rationale that explains to me WHY you believe you have earned a particular semester grade. You have typed grade rationales all throughout this semester, and if you have consistently taken the argumentative exercise seriously, then this assignment should not be too difficult because you have unknowingly been training for it for half the school year.
If I find your rationale convincing, you will receive full credit for this assignment. If I do not, this assignment will not be included in your semester grade, so you have nothing to lose either way. Please be aware that receiving credit for this assignment does not mean you will also receive a higher letter grade.

1. According to Faber, how long ago was the last liberal arts college shut down? Why did it close? Would you enjoy an education where your only classes were based on STEM, science/technology/engineering/math? Why or why not? 2. Based on what Mildred and her friends say about politics, why did Winston Noble win the presidency? Do you think voters in our world today focus on this same criteria? Explain. 3. After Montag’s disastrous attempt to enlighten the women with his reading of “The Sea of Faith,” he tells Faber, “I made them unhappier than they have been in years, I think...Maybe they’re right, maybe it’s best not to face things, to run, have fun. I don’t know...” What do you think? Is ignorance really bliss? Explain. 4. The title of this section of the novel is “The Sieve and the Sand.” “Sieve” is another word for strainer or colander. In this story, what does the sieve symbolically represent? What does the sand represent?

1. Apply what you have learned from today's lesson to determine whether we live in a utopia, dystopia, or some combination of both. Begin by conducting research about our own country's current state of affairs. You must research at least THREE credible sources.
2. In a page-and-a-half, argue whether we currently live in a utopia, dystopia, or some combination of both, and why. Support your argument with ideas and examples from your research.
3. This time, DO NOT use weaving. Instead, paraphrase (put into your own words) the information from your research and include in-text citations whenever you do. This will ensure you are avoiding plagiarism by distinguishing your own thoughts and ideas from those of the authors you researched.
4. Use ethos, pathos, and logos (all three must be used at least once in your writing) to persuade Mr. Yankowsky. Using bold text and parenthesis, label each rhetorical technique when you include it.

4. Use ethos, pathos, and logos (all three must be used at least once in your writing) to persuade Mr. Yankowsky. Using bold text and parenthesis, label each rhetorical technique when you include it.
5. Cite all your sources on a Works Cited page.

Due:
Provide a thoughtful response to either of the questions below:
1. Clarisse says that she’s not like the other teens, primarily because she was taught to be responsible for her actions and even “spanked when I needed it, years ago.” Where do you stand on the issue of spanking children who misbehave? From this passage, what do you think is Bradbury’s stance on the issue?
2. One of Beatty’s criticisms of the old woman and her books is that “none of those books agree with each other.” Obviously, author Ray Bradbury wants us to read a wide variety of books. What, do you suppose, happens when we read only books that align with our own world view? What is gained? What is lost?

Authors often embed symbols in their stories to enhance a theme or a character’s traits. Hurst uses birds, images and references to death, and numerous shades of red as symbols to enrich the meaning of his story, “The Scarlet Ibis.” Follow the steps below as you compose an 11-sentence paragraph in which you examine how Hurst uses symbolism to support his message to the reader.
1. Consider why Hurst wrote this story. What larger message was he trying to convey to us? Be sure your idea is a bold and arguable statement!
2. Looking at the symbolism handout you and your group completed, choose one of the three categories; it will be the over-arching symbol category that you will discuss in your paragraph.
3. After you’ve chosen one of the categories, look at all five pieces of concrete detail you and your group found in the story. Select the three that would work best as support for the bold and arguable statement you wrote in Step 1.
3. Start typing your paragraph. Begin with your statement from Step 1; it will serve as your topic sentence. Then, structure your paragraph as follows:
-Type a sentence that includes a combination of your own words, a concrete detail, and an in-text citation (this entire sentence should be emboldened). Support the concrete detail with two sentences of analysis (underlined) that demonstrate your ability to go beyond the obvious. This should be three sentences altogether.

1. Choose and complete TWO of the following assignment options:
A. Using the voice of one of the Spanish sailors trapped in Zaroff’s cellar, write a message-in-a-bottle letter seeking help. Be sure to include the story of how the sailor ended up on the island, how he’s been spending his days, his fears about the General’s plans, and how he plans to escape. Your letter must be at least 500 words and should include creative writing elements.
B. Take on the role of a newspaper reporter and present a news story in which you have interviewed Rainsford after he’s returned to the safety of the mainland. Be sure to use some quotes (which you’ll need to invent) from Rainsford as you accurately retell his story. Remember, news stories are written in third-person. Your article must be at least 500 words.
C. If you have some artistic skills, create a comic book version of the story, reducing it to just eight panels. Each panel should have some dialogue or narrative description. All wording must be taken exactly from the story. Images should be colored. Take a clear photograph of your work and upload it to Google Classroom.
D. Rainsford builds three specific traps during his time in the woods – a Malay mancatcher, a Burmese tiger pit, and the Ugandan knife spring. Using your artistic skills, sketch each trap. Then, label each part of the trap and include a brief description about how each trap works. Take a clear photograph of your work and upload it to Google Classroom.
