EXPECTED LEARNER OUTCOMES

·         Understand Spanish as spoken by a native speaker.

·         Answer in Spanish questions as posed in Spanish.

·         Follow directions given in Spanish.

SCHEDULE

FIRST QUARTER

                Etapa preliminar

                                OBJECTIVES:  Greet people, introduce yourself, say where you are from, exchange phone

numbers, say which day it is, recognize classroom and text instructions.

GRAMMAR:  Introduction to the concept of gender.

PRONUNCIATION:  How to say the name of each letter in the Spanish alphabet.

CULTURE:  Greeting customs in Spanish-speaking countries, expressions used to say good-bye in Spanish, saying country names in Spanish.

Unidad 1 Etapa 1

OBJECTIVES:  Greet others, introduce others, say where people live and are from, express likes.

GRAMMAR:  Use familiar and formal greetings, use subject pronouns and the verb ser, use ser de to express origin, use verbs to talk about what you like to do.

PRONUNCIATION:  Pronouncing vowels

CULTURE:  Distinguishing between familiar and formal greetings, Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S.

Unidad 1 Etapa 2

OBJECTIVES:  Describe others, give others likes and dislikes, describe clothing, discuss music.

GRAMMAR:  Use definite articles, use indefinite articles, use adjectives with gender agreement, use adjectives with number agreement.

PRONUNCIATION: “f”, “s”, “ch”.

                                CULTURE:  A Mexican-style rodeo, Tejano music groups.

Unidad 1 Etapa 3

COMMUNICATION:  Describe family, ask and tell ages, talk about birthdays, give dates, express possession.

GRAMMAR:  Use the verb tener, express possession using de, use possessive adjectives, use dates and months.

PRONUNCIATION:  “m” and “n”

CULTURE:  La quinceañera, Hispanic influences in Los Angeles, Traditional celebrations.

SECOND QUARTER

Unidad 2 Etapa 1

COMMUNICATION:  Describe classes and classroom objects, say how often you do something, discuss obligations.

GRAMMAR:  Use present tense of regular –ar verbs, use adverbs of frequency, use hay que and tener que.

PRONUNCIATION:  “y” and “ll”

CULTURE:  History of Mexico, The National Autonomous University of Mexico, pluma and bolígrafo.

Unidad 2 Etapa 2

COMMUNICATION:  Talk about schedules, ask and tell time, ask questions, say where you are going, request food.

GRAMMAR:  Use the verb ir, use phrases to tell time, use the verb estar, use interrogative words.

PRONUNCIATION:  “h” and “j”.

CULTURE:  Regional vocabulary, public high schools in Mexico, Olympic Stadium in Mexico City, snack foods in Mexico.

Unidad 2 Etapa 3

COMMUNICATION:  Discuss plans, sequence events, talk about places and people you know.

GRAMMAR:  Use ir + a + infinitive, use the present tense of regular –er and –ir verbs, use verbs with irregular yo forms, use the verb oír.

PRONUNCIATION:  Word stress.

CULTURE:  National Museum Of Anthropology, mealtimes in Mexico, El Zócalo.

THIRD QUARTER

Unidad 3 Etapa 1

COMMUNICATION:  Extend invitations, talk on the telephone, express feelings, say where you are coming from, say what just happened.

GRAMMAR:  Use estar with adjectives, use acabar de, use the verb venir, use gustar with infinitives.

PRONUNCIATION:  “b” and “v”.

CULTURE:  Puerto Rico, Ricky Martin, La bomba y la plena.

Unidad 3 Etapa 2

COMMUNICATION:  Talk about sports, express preferences, say what you know, make comparisons.

GRAMMAR:  Use the verb jugar, use stem-changing verbs:  e to ie, use the verb saber, use phrases for making comparisons.

PRONUNCIATION:  “ñ”.

CULTURE:  La Fortaleza, relationship of Puerto Rico to the United States, baseball in Puerto Rico, Roberto Clemente.

Unidad 3 Etapa 3

COMMUNICATION:  Describe the weather, discuss clothing and accessories, describe the geography of a place, its plants and animals.

GRAMMAR:  Use weather expressions, use tener expressions, use direct object pronouns, use the present progressive tense.

PRONUNCIATION:  “j” and “g”.

CULTURE:  El Yunque, El coquí, tourism in Puerto Rico.

FOURTH QUARTER

Unidad 4 Etapa 1

COMMUNICATION:  Identify places, give addresses, choose transportation, request directions, give instructions.

GRAMMAR:  Use the verb decir, use prepositions of location, use regular affirmative commands.

PRONUNCIATION:  “r”

CULTURE:  The history and culture of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Unidad 4 Etapa 2

COMMUNICATION:  Talk about shopping, make purchases, talk about giving gifts, bargaining.

GRAMMAR:  o to ue stem-changing verbs, indirect object pronouns, placement of indirect object pronouns.

PRONUNCIATION:  “rr”

CULTURE:  The artesanías of Oaxaca, Mexico, The Regional Museum of Oaxaca, Shopping and making purchases, Benito Juarez.

Unidad 4 Etapa 3

COMMUNICATION:  Order food and request the check, talk about food, express extremes, say where you went.

GRAMMAR:  Use the verb poner, use gustar to talk about things you like, use affirmative and negative words, use e to i stem-changing verbs, use reflexive verbs, use regular verbs in the preterite (past) tense.

PRONUNCIATION:  “g”

CULTURE:  Oaxacan cuisine, Oaxacan artistic heritage, Zapotec civilization, ruins of Monte Albán.

90-100=A

80-89  =B

70-79  =C

0-59    =F

GRADING CATEGORIES:

                PARTICIPATION  (Four points possible per day)                                                                                        =20%

·         Being in class  (As an incentive to maintain good attendance, 0 points are awarded on the day of an absence)

·         Doing Spanish work in Spanish class

·         Bringing your covered textbook, paper and pen or pencil to class every day

                CHAPTER TESTS                                                                                                                                              =20%

                                Chapter tests may be made up for full credit up to one school day after a verified absence.

                IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS                                                                                                                              =10%

In-class assignments may be made up for full credit up to one school day after a verified absence.  As an incentive to maintain good attendance, “group assignments” must be made up in full.

                HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS                                                                                                                       =5%

Homework assignments may be made up for full credit up to one school day after a verified absence.

                POP-QUIZZES                                                                                                                                                     =5%

Second Quarter:  Map of Mexico

Third Quarter:  Sporting Goods Store

Fourth Quarter:  3-D Downtown Map.

Projects submitted after the deadline will have 5% of the grade subtracted per day late.

MAKING UP MISSED WORK AS A RESULT OF AN ABSENCE:

The Education Code directs that students absent under the circumstances listed above be allowed to complete work and tests missed during the absence.  The teacher has the right to determine the period of time the student has to complete the assignments.  Assignments and tests are to be reasonable equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, those missed during the absence.  Make-up work may be required of suspended students.  Students may not make up work due to a verified truancy (Unexcused Absence).  As an incentive to maintain good attendance in my classes, Pop-quizzes may not be made up.

EXTRA CREDIT

EXTRA CREDIT CATEGORY A

You may do no more than THREE of the following per semester.  They will count as five participation points each (Maximum 15 participation points)  The deadlines are December 13 and May 22.

·         Create visual flashcards from the vocabulary lists at the end of each chapter.

·         Do any one of the activities from the page before the vocabulary list at the end of each chapter.

·         Do the ¿Qué piensas? questions after each chapter reading selection.

·         Ask the teacher for any supplemental worksheet(s).

·          Wherever there is a paragraph on a homework or in-class assignment, translate the paragraph to English.

·         Translate worksheets to English.

EXTRA CREDIT CATEGORY B

Go to The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the Los Angeles Museum District or The Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach.  Submit the receipt or ticket and a minimum one paragraph (in English) about what you saw.  This counts as ten points on your final examination.  You may do this only once per semester and you may not go to the same venue the following semester.  The deadlines are December 19 and May 29.

CLASSROOM NORMS

·         Respect yourself and others

·         Be in your seat before the bell rings.  I do not excuse a tardy by bringing a hall pass from another teacher.

·         Do not eat or drink in this classroom.

·         Do not talk while the teacher is talking.  Do not talk when the teacher has called on someone else.

·         Do not disrupt class by speaking without asking permission.

·         Do not disrupt class by getting out of your seat without asking permission.

·         Remove all hats, caps, hoods.  Wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

·         Do not let me see, hear or smell chewing gum.

·         Do things the first time.  Do not be defiant.

·         Do your own work.  Keep your eyes on your own paper.

·         Keep your language and behavior clean.

·         Do not use electronic devices in this room. 

PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE

STEP ONE:  Verbal warning.  The teacher will record the date and reason for the warning.

STEP TWO:  Thirty minute teacher-initiated detention in the Detention Room.

STEP THREE:  Referral to counselor.

STEP FOUR:  On-campus conference with parent, teacher, student, counselor and/or administrator.

STEP FIVE:  Referral to The Office Of Student Services.

ATTENDANCE

TARDIES

You are tardy if you are not in your seat when the bell begins to ring.

FIRST TARDY:  Warning. 

SECOND TARDY:  Warning.

THIRD TARDY:  30 minute teacher-initiated detention in the Detention Room.

FOURTH TARDY:  Detention, parent conference.

FIFTH TARDY:  Referral to the Office Of Student Services for Academic Make-Up Time.

SIXTH AND/OR MORE TARDIES:  Detention, parent notification, referral to The Office Of Student Services.

ABSENCES

When you are absent, you are expected to bring a note to the Office Of Attendance.  If you do not bring the note, or the Office Of Attendance does not accept your reason as an excused absence, you are considered truant.  (Unexcused Absence)

FIRST TRUANCY:  Warning.  Phone call to parent.

SECOND TRUANCY:  Referral to The Office Of Student Services for Academic Make-Up Time.

THIRD TRUANCY:  Parent, teacher, student, counselor and/or administrator conference.  Referral for Academic Make-Up Time.

FOURTH AND/OR MORE TRUANCIES:  Referral to The Office Of Student Services.

DETENTION

     If detention is assigned, it is to be served after school Tuesdays in room C-305. 

·         The doors will be locked at 3:00.  Anyone reporting after the doors are locked is considered late and dismissed.  The detention will be reassigned.

·         The detention sheet with a parent signature must be given to the teacher covering the detention room.  Without the detention paper, the student will be dismissed.  If there is no parent signature, the student will be dismissed.  The detention will be reassigned.

·         A disciplinary referral to the Student Service Office as well as an on-campus parent conference will be requested for failure to report for a reassigned detention.

 

HALL PASSES

You are allowed no more than three hall passes to the restroom, locker or water fountain per quarter.  Unused passes  may not roll over to the next quarter.

DRESS CODE

I will warn students with “mild” dress code violations.  (i.e. open-toed footwear).  I will send “flagrant” violators to The Office Of Student Services to change clothes.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

FIRST TIME:  I will take away the device.  I will return it to you at the end of the period.  I will make a note to myself in my roll book.

SECOND AND ALL FUTURE TIMES:  I will take away the device.  I will submit it to The Office Of Student Services.  The student will have to retrieve the device after school.
