page 75 of The Good Earth Wang Lung says “They cannot take the land from
me. The labor of my body and the fruit
of the fields I have put into that which cannot be taken away. If I had the silver, they would have taken
it. If I had bought with the silver to
store it, they would have taken it all.
I have the land still, and it is mine.”
Wang
Lung feels a deep connection to the earth, so deep that he is obsessed with
working in his fields every day and cannot imagine any other type of job. While he feels envious of people with money,
he also feels that those same people are foolish with their money because they
do not invest in land, the only thing he considers worthy of owning because it
cannot be destroyed and it is always stable.
In
a 5-paragraph or more essay, discuss the importance of the earth to Wang Lung
and how it forms his life and the lives of his family through the decades and
what the final outcome of owning so much land appears to be at the end of the
book and how he reacts to it.

Due:
I don't actually believe in extra credit. If you do the work I assign and turn it in, chances are you will pass this class. However, I always seem to have students who want to raise their grades, even if they have a "B". I do make an effort to make extra credit challenging and I only offer one assignment a semester.
For this semester's extra credit, you need to explore banned books. You may find a list of banned books on several sites, the most common and most easily accessed is ala.org (American Library Association). This site has yearly lists of banned books going back at lease two decades.
Find two books that have some time in the past been banned - it does not have to be one that is currently on the banned list.
Do not pick the first two books on the list. Look at the lists and read through them - you will be surprised at some of the books that are on the list. You MAY NOT include any book that you have been assigned to read in school. I know what books you have been assigned to read throughout your school years.
Include the following pieces of information:
1. Book title
2. Book author
3. Date of publication
4. When the book was banned
5. A brief synopsis of the book plot
6. Why was the book banned?
7. Find a verifiable source that explains the standards that must be met in order for a book to be banned and list those standards. How many of those standards were met for each book before it was banned?
8. Who called to have the book banned? (Usually it starts with a parent or parent group at a public school or library). If you cannot find this information just put N/A for question 8 (that means Not Applicable).
Write in complete sentences. Spelling and sentence structure will always matter. Poor spelling and poor sentence structure equals a poor grade.

Things Fall Apart Writing Assignments 1 - 9 Create a new document, copy and paste the number of the writing assignment (in numerical order, please!), the writing prompt, and your response. Then submit your work here. You will probably have to copy and paste it here. I will go back and figure out the total combined point value for all of the writings.
Due:
TFA Final Assignment Now that we have finished reading Things Fall Apart, I want you to think abut the different archetypes that show you who Okonkwo is. Remember, a character can fit more than one archetype at a time and those archetypes can change over the course of a story. Think about the archetype that best fits Okonkwo at the beginning of the story and the one that fits him best at the end of the story. Choose 5 archetypes that describe the character of Okonkwo throughout the story. Define each archetype and then in one or two sentences for each archetype, describe how that archetype fits Okonkwo. What about Okonkwo's situation or behavior tells you that is the archetype he is modeling at that point in the book?
Due:
From the District Commissioner's point of view, what is wrong with the natives way of life?
Due:
While Okonkwo is in exile, he hears that the missionaries have come to his home village and things are rapidly changing. Churches are being built, people are being educated to speak and write in English, villagers are being told that the spirits they worship are not real. Writing from Okonkwo's point of view, how does he view these changes? Does he think he can stop the changes or does he think the villagers need to let the people who want to convert to Christianity do so? How does he now view his son?
Due:
Okonkwo lived his entire life afraid that he was being judged by the way his father lived his life instead of being judged on his own merits. On the bottom of page 178, one of Okonkwo's clansmen tells the District Commissioner something about Okonkwo. What does he say about Okonkwo? Do you think Okonkwo knew this is how his clansmen regarded him? If his clansmen had said this to Okonkwo, do you think Okonkwo's outcome would have been different? Explain.
Due:
Writing 4 Due October 14
Ekwefi has suffered the loss of several children despite the efforts of the village medicine man. This has affected her greatly and she blames her own chi, spirit, for her bad luck. Writing from Ekwefi’s point of view, how does she feel about the loss of her children, the way the medicine man treats the dead body of her third child, the fortune of Okonkwo’s first wife who has given birth to three healthy sons, and her daughter Ezinma, the only one of her children to survive childhood.

Writing 5 – A wedding is a joyous event in most cultures, however, it seems that the preparations are mostly the responsibility of the women. Explain in your words, how the women might feel as they prepare the fest for a new bride. How often do they gather together to spend social time? To help each other? Is this perhaps a time they look forward to because they have time to be together without men?

Writing 3 We have all seen that Okonkwo is a harsh man. He is not very kind to his Nwoye because Okonkwo thinks he is not manly enough. He wishes Ikemefuna was his son and hopes that Nwoye becomes more like the youth he is fostering. Based on the knowledge you have of Okonkwo, Nwoye, and Ikemefuna, how does Nwoye feel about his father and the way Okonkwo treats him? Use examples from the text to support your claim.
Due:
Writing 2 In Chapter 3, page 19 we learn that the year Okonkwo borrowed seed-yams from another member of the village was the worst year any one could remember. There was too much rain followed by a drought which killed all of his yams. Speaking from Okonkwo’s point of view, how does he feel about the failure of his attempt to start his own farm?

Due:
Using 5 different characters from the movie Shrek, assign one archetype to each character and explain in one or two sentences why that archetype fits that character. Due:

Finish reading Beowulf, pages 36-42. Answer the questions that are posted with this assignment.
Due:
While you are reading about the battle, write down words that you think describe an epic hero - by that I mean a hero of whom poems and stories are written.
Due:
Please answer the questions and submit by 6 p.m. Friday.
Due:
So far we have read 12 pages of Beowulf, comprising 3 different sections. For each section, write a 1 paragraph summary. A summary is not a retelling of all events that happened, but rather, compiling the IMPORTANT events that happened and briefly giving an account. For example, you do not have to list all of the heroic traits of Beowulf, you can say he because of his strength and caring, he was considered a heroic warrior. A paragraph is 5 - 7 sentences. One paragraph for each section, therefore, 3 paragraphs. Due at the end of class, even if you are not finished writing or it will not be accepted.
Due:
If you do not have the textbook yet, please start at the beginning of the text. Pace yourself. If you only read the first 4 pages today that is okay. Split up the first two reading assignments and today's assignment so you don't become overwhelmed. Do your best to be caught up on the reading by Monday.
FOR TODAY, THURSDAY AUGUST 20: Read from the bottom of page 27 where it says THE BATTLE WITH GRENDEL to the end of that passage about half way down page 30.
