Final Project (2nd Semester): Choreographic Process

Choreograph a dance piece using any style of music that is either a solo, duet, or trio routine! If you are doing a solo, your routine must be at least 60 seconds long (but there is no maximum). If you are doing a duet or trio, your routine must be at least 90 seconds long (but there is no maximum).

REQUIREMENTS
Your routine must include the following....

1) A beginning AND an end!
2) Use all three levels of space (high, medium, low)
3) Move through all available negative space in the frame of your video
4) Stop time OR Change speed of movement (Manipulate time in a creative way through your movements!)
5) Demonstrate a consistent energy quality or movement force throughout the piece
6) Costume your piece appropriately (Makeup can be used, or not at all)
7) Only one piece of music can be used (No Mixes!)
8) No repetitive movements... Find New Shapes and Don't repeat the same moves after you include them
9) Perform!!!!!!!
10) OPTIONAL: Use creative lighting, video filters, or shadows!

FILMING
You may film your routine in vertical or horizontal mode in any indoor/outdoor location of your choosing (or combination of locations!). You may use any video editing software or social media editing tools as you wish. You may change camera angles, use a handheld stabilizer (gimble), or have a cameraman move around you if you choose (There is no limit to creativity here). As for music, it is preferred that you overlay your music onto the video by editing it, so that any background noise is not heard during your performance.

Skills Test #4: Jazz in Google Classroom

Skills Test #4: Jazz

Watch the attached tutorial videos to help you rehearse the jazz choreography we have been working on in class. The video of the routine with the music has been uploaded to YouTube, which means you will have the option to slow down the speed of the video if you wish (this might help you practice any steps that you are struggling with while rehearsing to the music).

Record & Upload a video of yourself performing the choreography to the best of your ability. Pay special attention to the details we have practiced in class, as well as the technical details that are emphasized in the tutorial video. You may film vertical or landscape mode, but make sure your entire body is visible in the performance from beginning to end!

Your performance will be scored in the following areas:
1) Memorization of Choreography
2) Dance Technique
3) Body Placement
4) Performance/Effort.

The more you practice the routine from beginning to end, the stronger your skills test performance will be... so rehearse this routine as much as possible! Filming yourself periodically to assess your progress will help you to improve for your final video submission. Do your best & give it your all, dancers!

HW #10: Choreographic Process Check-In (125 words minimum)

In past assignments, we have been choreographing short pieces that explore the choreographic elements of space, time, and energy/force. Which concept(s) have you struggled with the most when creating choreography for these assignments, and why? Do you TRULY feel that you have an understanding of how to successfully choreograph with all these three elements in mind in future assignments? Why or why not? This is your chance to let me know what parts of the choreographic process you need more practice with!

HW #9: May The Force/Energy Be With You

In this movement study, you will choreograph a short piece that is at least 30 seconds long, using any music selection of your choice. There are two parts to this assignment, so make sure you attach both to receive full credit:

1) Post THREE words in the private comments section for your assignment. Make sure each word connotes some type of energy quality or movement force. Try not to use “general” words. If unsure, ask me for feedback during class time.

2) Choreograph & UPLOAD a video file performing your finished choreography... making sure that your dance movements demonstrate the three energy/force qualities you listed in your private comment.

TIP: When I grade this assignment, I will be checking to see how well you were able to creatively translate your three chosen energy qualities into movement. Good Luck!

HW #8: Slow/Medium/Fast in Google Classroom

HW #8: Slow/Medium/Fast

In this choreography assigment you will be manipulating the choreographic element of time!

STEP #1:
Design a choreographic movement composition to any piece of music that is 16-counts long! SOME ADVICE: An instrumental music selection without song lyrics will be much easier to choreograph to while learning this choreographic skill, but you are allowed to choreograph to any music selection you desire.

STEP #2:
Rehearse the choreography you created in Step 1 at SLOW-MOTION (i.e. half the speed of the original), AND rehearse those same movements at FAST-MOTION (i.e. twice as fast). DO NOT change the speed of the music!

STEP #3:
Connect all three movement phrases together (back-to-back) in any order that you wish.

STEP #4:
Record & Upload a video of yourself performing the entire 48-count piece... Basically, your routine should demonstrate all (3) manipulations of time. Upload your performance as one video attachment: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to film three separate videos and edit them together = CHEATING!

HW #6: The Why... Before The Wow in Google Classroom

HW #6: The Why... Before The Wow

After watching the following TED Talk videos, I want you to reflect on the choreographic process as it relates to the concept of choreographing "The Why... Before The Wow". How does this concept apply to your own creative ideas, themes, or any personal inspirations that you might want to explore as we learn about the process of creating your own dance choreography? Whether you are the choreographer or a member of the audience, how does interpreting dance choreography play a role in regards to this concept? Let me know your thoughts!

HW #5: Dance Haiku (Levels of Space) in Google Classroom

HW #5: Dance Haiku (Levels of Space)

INTRODUCTION:
A haiku is traditionally a Japanese poem consisting of three short lines that do not rhyme. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables.

A haiku is considered to be more than just a "type" of poem; it is a way of looking at the physical world and seeing something deeper. It should leave you with a strong feeling or impression...

Example:
“Creeping through the dark
Destroyer hunts all night long
Other cats beware!”

STEP 1: WRITE
Write a haiku poem that addresses things you WISH you could do or things you WISH could happen in your life or in the lives of your family/friends. Using VERBS in each line of prose will help you write a vivid poem. Attach your poem as a google doc to this assignment BEFORE the end of this period!

STEP 2: CHOREOGRAPH
Create a movement phrase to your haiku poem that demonstrates the use of all three levels of space (high, medium, low). Refer to the "Principles of Choreography" video in the choreographic process extended learning section if you need a reminder about what I am looking for. Record a video of yourself performing this choreography as you verbally recite your haiku poem. Attach the video to this assignment by the due date.

HW #4: Dancer in Google Classroom

HW #4: Dancer

World-renowned ballet dancer Sergei Polunin is know as the "bad boy" of the ballet community. The film "Dancer" was produced after a dance concept video of him performing a contemporary ballet solo went viral several years ago on the internet. He was already famous for his work as a dancer, but when the video went viral he became "YouTube Famous" around the world.

For this assigment please discuss how the sacrifices made by his parents and family contributed to his initial success as a young dancer, AND ALSO make sure to highlight the role that his rebellion from the ballet world played in his subsequent career choices. Use examples from the film "Dancer", and from his life story to construct your reponse. Lastly, make sure to also hypothesize WHY you think his concept video went viral on YouTube...

P.S. I have attached the film we watched in class AND ALSO the video performance that went viral on YouTube for your reference.
