Now that we have written about your identity and intersections, it is important to know who you are and also what your values are. In the attached handouts, are two pages of values or you can add your own. But answer the 2 questions on the google doc and upload that as your assignment. First, choose two values that reflect what you stand for. then write 12 sentences that explain HOW your behaviors, decisions and people support the two values you chose.

Use the writing guidelines & sample body paragraph to help you write the 2nd body paragraph for your essay

Write a 12 sent response answering one of the questions below:
-Which one of your many personal identities (choose only 1 ex. my athlete identity) are a part of your earliest memories? Share those memories and how they impacted the creation/development of that aspect of your identity. Did you or did others contribute most to the creation/development of that aspect of your identity.
OR
-Which one of your many personal identities (choose only 1 ex. my oldest sibling identity) gives you power or privilege? Explain HOW with specific examples from your life. WHY do you think it gives you power/privilege? How has this power/privilege impacted the development of you personal identity?

2. Read the examples of social identity handout.
3. Fill out the social identity chart using the examples as a reference guide. DO NOT TURN THIS IN
4. Write a 12 sentence response that answers one of the two questions below
-Which identity has the greatest effect on how YOU see yourself and why?
OR
-Which identity has the greatest effect on how OTHERS see you (whether positively or negatively) and
why?
On the worksheet, WHICH YOU AREN'T TURNING IN, YOU ARE JUST THINKING ABOUT YOUR ANSWERS, you only write in your answers for the first column. all the other columns you just put an X in the rows where the answer might apply. you can put you don't know or are unsure or don't want to share. And you can add your own identity markers at the bottom such as musician, artist, older sibling, athlete etc.

*Be prepared to share! BUT You only have to share what you are COMFORTABLE with.

Using your thesis from the conflict essay handout, write body paragraph 1 for your essay. The paragraph should be an example from the book that supports your theme.
Your body paragraph is 4 sentences long but it can be more.

*citation has the authors last name and page number in parentheses and has a period after it (Silvera 51).

Look at the directions for Essay 2 to know the difference between a topic and a theme

Based on what you have read in the first 1/4 of the book, write a 5 paragraph essay about one character. Pls include 3 pieces of textual evidence stated by that character. The essay should provide a thesis that makes an assertion about the character's personality.

Essay Format example:
Thesis: Christina Carmona, the main character in "Book of Keppel", written by Lisa Galvan, is very intelligent because of the observations she makes about her parent, her teacher and her school.
Body Paragraph 1: Provide text evidence about her observations about her parent and explain.
Body Paragraph 2: Provide text evidence about her observations about her teacher and explain.
Body Paragraph 3: Provide text evidence about her observations about her school and explain.
**all text evidence should be copied word for word from the text and cited in MLA format with the author's last name and page number. (Galvan 52).
**include an introduction and a conclusion.
**must be written in the third person (do not use the words I, me, my, us, we, you)
**page numbers should be in MLA format which means in the upper right hand corner with your last name and number only Ex. Nevarez 1, Nevarez 2
**You do not need a work cited page for your book
**Do not use any contractions unless they are in the original text that you are using for evidence


Please use an MLA heading at the top of the first page of the essay
For example:
Karla Nevarez (student name)
Ms. Christina Carmona (teacher name)
English period 3 (class and period)
1 September 2020 (date using this MLA format)

*the entire paper should be double spaced using 12pt Times New Roman font

Write a response to this poem that includes your perspective on how the poem relate to the 2020 pandemic, how you spent quarantine and what you think (predict) will happen as a RESULT of the 2020 pandemic. Responses must be a minimum of twelve sentences, but may be more. Make sure you respond to all three parts of the prompt as listed above. Follow the editing rules in your first draft:
-use transition words
-create 3 paragraphs
-no contractions
-have a title
-use MLA heading
-refer to the poem title "This is Timeless..." and author (unknown)
-identify with an asterisk how you could elaborate to make this response longer)

Read the poem from top to bottom. Then read it from bottom to top. Write a response to the poem. How does it make you feel? What other situation or experience does this relate to in your own life OR in current events? Response must be a minimum of 12 sentences, but it can be more. Be prepared to share.

Create a 10 slide google slides presentation. The title slide should have a photo of yourself and your name and say "My Perspectives". The rest of the 9 slides should each have a one sentence statement of what you believe. Each sentence must start with the words "I believe... Each slide should have an image also. See my example and follow the same format. Some students will be chosen to share their presentations with the whole class or in small groups. For full credit when you present, you MUST say additional information that elaborates on your sentence that is not visible on the slide. Make sure your statements and images are school appropriate.

On a google doc, list the title and author of the book you have chosen. Once you choose a book you must keep that book.

Divide the total number of chapters or pages into 4 parts. List your four sections and the due dates.
For example:
Due date 1 Sept 1st Ch. 1-5 or pgs. 1-100 (this will depend on how long your book is)
Due date 2 Sept 15 Ch.6-10 or pgs. 101-199
Due date 3 Sept 29 Ch. 11-13 or pgs. 200-250
Due Date 4 Oct. 13 Ch 14-18 or pgs. 251-300

**Upload the title author and dates with reading assignments on the google doc and upload it by Aug 18.

FYI
You will be required to do 4 assignments related to this independent reading book. You have two weeks to complete each assignment. I will post each assignment as a separate entry into google classroom. You may read/do the assignments as fast or slowly as you look but must meet all the deadlines.
1. Write an essay about one character.
2. Write an essay about theme.
3. Write an essay about conflict.
4. Write a recommendation/review for this book.
