Happy Slam Day everyone!! I am so excited to celebrate our work, our stories and our truth!!
I NEED THIS! WE NEED THIS!!
So today we will start in our home groups... ONE person from each group should be the "tech" person. That person will share their scree & play the group's videos from flipgrid.
ANOTHER person should be the "recorder" for the group and open the attached document. Write down the group feedback in the document. Then turn it in!! It needs to be turned in by 9:15 AM! That will give us enough time to watch the videos that each group chooses!
ENJOY THIS!!

To "revise" means to "see again". That's what I want you to think about in this next writing phase. Use the exercises attached to look again at your draft and discover ways to improve it.
TYPE YOUR FINAL DRAFT into a document.
After the text of your poem, compose a Writers Memo that answers the following questions:
1) Which revision ideas from the attached document were you working on? How did these ideas help you with revision? Be specific.
2) What is your classic poem and how did the classic poem help you with revision?
3) Do a final proofread to catch errors.

Once you have read an outside text (independently or with a group) post a review of the text here. Post it as a class comment so we all can see it. By the end of the year, we should have a really cool set of reviews. Some of them may even make your summer reading lists. CLICK DONE when you've posted your first review! (Which implies you should/could do more than one!)
Due:
Use your group's google slides to document today's small group discussion. The AGENDA is on the first slide. Follow it! I will be sending timing reminders throughout the meeting. I may also visit your groups periodically. I will do so with my camera off and muted. I am NOT there to facilitate discussion. I am there to observe the quality of your discussions.

Due:
Use the attached document to learn a little about the poem/poet you've claimed.
Due:
Use these handouts to complete your letter guide.

Open the Tone Map Info document that you used to create your POL tone map. Turn to your POL tone map in your notebook. Reviewing these documents will help you to prepare your TONE MAP for your GetLit Poem. Hopefully you have your poem printed and you can glue it down in your Readers Notebook to complete yours. If you do not have the poem printed, you will have to hand write it in it's original form in order to complete the tone map.

Hi everyone! Please take some time to watch our Poetry Out Loud performances. Comment on the THREE performances that stand out to you as specially effective. Then transfer the names of those students to the google form attached to this assignment.
Due:
Use the Flipgrid link below to access the Poetry Out Loud topic on our class Flipgrid page. Recording and submitting your recitation video should be pretty self explanatory from there.
I am also linking to the Poetry Out Loud video playlist so you can watch some examples. Have fun watching a few of them to get an idea of what your video can look like.
I am also linking to the first round performance of the eventual national Poetry Out Loud winner, Eden Getahun, from Sacremento. It was recorded in March before the pandemic. She went on to win Poetry Out Loud 2020. You can find her video submission in the YouTube playlist.

Use the instructions attached to reflect on Acts 1&2. You will complete your own work today but will share your work with your home group at the beginning of the period on Thursday. The One Pager will be completed either by hand (preferred) or digitally, but it should be in your readers notebook either way. Place it next to your 4-square on Acts 1 & 2.
Due:
Review the official AP free response rubric for each type of essay along with the grading commentaries for the sample essays you reviewed over the weekend.
1) In your WRITER'S NOTEBOOK, create a FRAME (like the one you did for "Why AP Lang"). Title this frame "Rubric Review".
2) Take notes on the rubric for each type of essay. In the final section of the frame, jot down some big ideas that you take away from reviewing these rubrics. What patterns do you see about high scoring essays?
3) Using this information, determine which of your three timed writings you feel would score the highest.
4) Turn in an image/PDF of this essay. Please post a private comment on your submission with an explanation of your self score - broken down by category - for the essay you are turning in.

Due:
1) Go to the Listen to Poems link again. You will be listening to "Jenney Kissed Me". Use the document that is attached. You will each have your own copy to turn in.
2) As you listen to the poem, complete the TONE MAP by adding tone words (from your TONE CHART) that describe the tone of each section listed. Pay attention to SHIFTS in tone. They can happen quickly. Once you feel like you've accurately described all the tones in the poem, submit your TONE MAP.
3) Then open the Tone Map Info document. This will help you with preparing your own TONE MAP for your own poem! Hopefully you have your poem printed and you can glue it down to complete yours. If you do not have the poem printed, you will have to hand write it in it's original form in order to complete the tone map. Your TONE MAP should be on the RIGHT of your TONE CHART!

Due:
FIRST - go to the link to POETRY OUT LOUD - Listen to Poems. Listen to:
1) The Power of Poetry
2) Conveying Emotion, with excerpts from Hamlet. You may want to listen to this one a few times.
SECOND - google TONE IN LITERATURE and spend a few minutes reminding yourself what it is.
THIRD - Use the link below to access the list of TONE WORDS. You DO NOT need to know all 319 words. That'd be CRAZY!! But I do want you to have a working list of tone adjectives to use throughout the year.
So, using the list, focus on words that you already knew the definition for.
Prepare a left page that has a matching right in your READERS NOTEBOOK. Create a modified 4 Square like the one I've attached. This will be your TONE CHART. Categorize the words you are already familiar with. You do not need to add definitions, just the words themselves. Try to have at least 10 words in each category.
Then, go back through and add at least least 2 NEW words in each category. This is something you can do periodically to learn new ways to describe tone.

Step 2: First, identify the punctuation that indicates the end of each sentence. (Circle each one if you are working from a print out.) On the next LEFT page in your readers section, write out your poem in COMPLETE SENTENCES. Skip a line between each sentence. Then, on the right page across from where you were working, create a letter guide that will help you memorize your poem. I have attached the letter guide instructions below. (My example is there too!)
No need to upload anything. Just remember that everything you do is evidence of your progress towards the learning objectives.

Due:
On the next blank page in the Readers section of your notebook, create the note taking 4-Square. I have provided an example for you to get started. Then read the text "A Talk to Teachers". It is an essay written by Black American writer James Baldwin in 1963. As you read, note your thinking in each section of the 4-Square. You can use the Depth & Complexity Icons if you'd like. I just want to be able to see you grappling with the big ideas of the essay. Please upload your notes so I can compare them to the notes you submitted last week. I am looking for improvement or consistency. Remember to DIG DEEP and LOOK FOR CONNECTIONS! Get out of your DEFAULT MODE!
When you are done, work on your commentary and reply which is due tonight! It would be great if this text were included in that response.

Due:
Will we watch the video as a class. Then, in breakouts of 4 and using the shared google slides, you will read more carefully and create a 3-2-1 reflection using the depth & complexity icons. These will help facilitate discussion and generate some thoughts for this week's commentary.

Examine it's importance/relationship to the previous "why" texts. How you take notes is up to you. You can use the Depth & Complexity Icons if you'd like. I just want to be able to see you grappling with the big ideas of the text. Submit your notes through this assignment in any way that works: PDF, image, google slide, etc.

On a blank piece of paper (or better yet in the Readers section of your notebook) create the note taking frame. I have provided an example for you to get started. Then watch the video "This is Water". It is a commencement speech written and delivered by American novelist David Foster Wallace. In the TOP section of your frame, note your thinking about the text. How you take notes is up to you. You can use the Depth & Complexity Icons if you'd like. I just want to be able to see you grappling with the big ideas of the speech. You DO NOT need to submit anything for this task yet as we will be adding texts to our frame.

Open our class Curation Project. Take some time to look at each other's slides. When you notice a connection with a classmate, make a comment explaining the connection. Start each comment with "You are like me because...". Let's see all the ways we intersect and align!
