Julius Caesar Essay Topics

Directions:  Choose one of the following topics for your essay.  Write a five-paragraph essay that includes a thesis paragraph with a thesis statement, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.  


Use the third person, present tense.  Each body paragraph must have concrete evidence, that is, a quote or quotes from the play.  Identify the speaker, situation, and importance of each quote.   Explain how your evidence proves your argument.  Do not plagiarize.

  • You may write your rough draft on the Shaffer Essay Template (handout).

  • Your final draft must be typed.  Use MLA format.

  • Grading Rubric: Dr. Land’s essay rubric (used previously in our class)


Option One: Write an essay in which you prove that Brutus is a man of honor destroyed by forces beyond his control.  Identify and explain three reasons for Brutus’ downfall.


Option Two:  Write an essay in which you prove that Brutus is a self-righteous hypocrite who uses high-minded phrases to hide his evil intentions and deeds.
