Directions:  Choose one of the following topics for your essay.  Write a five-paragraph essay that includes a thesis paragraph with a thesis statement; three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.  Use the third person, present tense.  Each body paragraph must have concrete evidence, that is, a quote or quotes from the play.  Identify the speaker, situation, and importance of each quote.  Explain how your evidence proves your point.  Do not plagiarize.

  • You may write your rough draft on the Shaffer Essay Template (handout).

  • Your final draft must be typed.  Use MLA format.

  • Grading Rubric: Dr. Land’s essay rubric (used previously in our class)

Option One:  Romeo and Juliet act impulsively and hastily.  This behavior contributes to their tragic deaths.  Identify, describe, and explain three decisions or actions that Romeo and Juliet should have taken (and fail to take) at two different points in the play.  Explain how these actions or decisions would change the outcome of their fate.

Option Two:  The Nurse is an advisor and confidante to Juliet.  Friar Laurence is an advisor and confidant to Romeo. Identify, describe, and explain how the Nurse is helpful and harmful as an advisor and confidant to Juliet.  (Or, identify, describe, and explain how the Friar is helpful and harmful to Romeo.)  Explain whether the adult character is more helpful or more harmful to the younger character.  Consider the protagonists’ secret wedding and untimely deaths.
