Description

Beginning Drama is open to any student grade 9-12. In this class we learn the fundamentals of voice and movements through pantomime, improvisation, and scripted acting. Our focus is on the stage and the history of theatre as it pertains to genres, trends, and movements of theatre. We cover a lot of material in beginning drama and students are asked to perform and create on a daily basis. As in all my classes, we have zero tolerance for disrespect in any form. My students are asked to take risks with their emotions everyday and respect for themselves and each other is a key element to them being comfortable to take those risks. In addition to the work we do in class, students are required to spend ten (10) hours each semester outside of class on the various productions we will be doing throughout the year. There are many ways this requirement can be fulfilled and postings on those opportunities will be updated on my website throughout the year. This is one of the most rewarding classes students can take in high school. When students are finished with this course they will be better communicators, problem solvers, and active thinkers. Attached is a letter to students and parent, the course outline with objectives, and a letter that needs to be signed and returned to me regarding the type of material we use in Drama class.

Thanks and see you soon!

You must create a flushed out, fully developed character with a first name, middle name, and last name, an occupation and something interesting that makes them unique. You have to do a 1 minute speech of ONE of the following:
1. "What the World needs now..."
2. A secret you have in your closet.
3. An acceptance speech of an award your character would win.

Speech MUST be 1 minute and must not exceed 1.5 minutes. Characters MUST be original and not a character that already exists. For example, you can be some kind of super hero, but you can not be Superman. Have fun!

Assignment

Please do a mindful activity as described in class on Friday. I want you to sit some place by yourself for five minutes and observe the time without talking, using an electronic device, or anything else. The idea is for you to really "see" and "hear" what is happening around you without judging yourself or anything you see or hear. Just observe things...be mindful of them. We will talk about your experience on Monday.
