World Literature (English 7/8) (CSU, UC)

Students read and respond to historically or culturally significant works of world literature including a wide variety of classic and contemporary literature. They conduct in-depth analysis of recurrent themes. Students write coherent and focused texts that convey a well-defined perspective and tightly reasoned argument combining the rhetorical strategies of narration, exposition, persuasion, and description. Students write and speak with a command of standard conventions of English. They deliver focused and coherent presentations that convey clear and distinct perspectives and demonstrate solid reasoning.

Career Path Sequence Requirement: Business and Finance

Traditional and contemporary world literature is the basis for integrating reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The literature selections include fiction, non-fiction, the essay, drama, and poetry. Four themes - Ethics, Leadership, Work, and Success - are examined through the literature and are used as a basis for contemporary writing and project assignments. This class emphasizes hands-on experience with computers. Students who plan careers in business, finance, economics, or computer science should take this course.

Advanced Placement English Literature provides students the opportunity to take a college level course and earn college credit upon passing the yearly national exam in Literature and Composition. Students develop accurate, perceptive reading through close study of major traditional and contemporary texts representing various literary genres. They acquire a fluent, precise writing style through the preparation of essays about the texts. In addition, students generate independent, thoughtful, and analytical discourse during class discussions. Students deliver oral presentations demonstrating their mastery of the literary modes and genres with poise and clarity.
