English 1/2 (CSU, UC)
Year course open to grade 9
Meets graduation requirement: English (10 credits)

Students study and respond to historically, culturally, and socially significant works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, Shakespearean drama, mythology, and poetry. Primary focus is on the foundations of literature. Writing exercises include expository (analysis and comparison/contrast), description, and technical writing. In addition, students respond to literature through speaking and listening activities. Students study literary terms, vocabulary, and conventions of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Prerequisite: Placement test to be given in grade 8
Meets graduation requirement: English (10 credits) Bonus GPA credit

Students participate in an intensive study of fiction, Shakespearean drama, poetry, and non-fiction. Study of these literary forms provides the basis for student writing of narratives, business letters, and responses to literature through expository essays. Students write compositions that demonstrate higher level analytical and evaluation skills. In addition, students listen actively and respond to literature through oral communications and presentations. Students study literary terms, vocabulary, and conventions of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
