Background of MKHS Alliance
BACKGROUND OF MKHS ALLIANCE
The Mark Keppel Alliance was founded in 1996 when the Alhambra School District was forced to redraw the high school boundaries after San Gabriel formed its own school district. A group of concerned parents and teachers joined together to form an “alliance” of community organizations, businesses, students, teachers, parents, alumni, and friends, striving to graduate the very best in an effort to draw attention to the facility needs at Mark Keppel. In June, 2004, the Alliance formally incorporated.
During this time, the Alliance has been the advocate on Mark Keppel’s behalf at city council meetings, school board meetings, and in the media. We have raised money to support the academic and sports programs at the school, to provide “the extras” that the school District cannot. We continue striving to meet the goals set down by the founders of the organization.
With the passage of the high school bond, new construction has begun, and the facilities are beginning to get a facelift, there is still work to be done. Everyone is invited to attend our monthly meetings on the last Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the school cafeteria. There are no meetings in June, November and December. In May, 2009, The Alliance was recognized by the Alhambra Educational Foundation as an “everyday hero” community organization that provides service to education. In 2005, thanks to a generous donation from then mayor Mike Eng, and other community groups , the Alliance was able to donate the electronic marquee.
