On
page 75 of The Good Earth Wang Lung says “They cannot take the land from
me. The labor of my body and the fruit
of the fields I have put into that which cannot be taken away. If I had the silver, they would have taken
it. If I had bought with the silver to
store it, they would have taken it all.
I have the land still, and it is mine.”

Wang
Lung feels a deep connection to the earth, so deep that he is obsessed with
working in his fields every day and cannot imagine any other type of job. While he feels envious of people with money,
he also feels that those same people are foolish with their money because they
do not invest in land, the only thing he considers worthy of owning because it
cannot be destroyed and it is always stable.

In
a 5-paragraph or more essay, discuss the importance of the earth to Wang Lung
and how it forms his life and the lives of his family through the decades and
what the final outcome of owning so much land appears to be at the end of the
book and how he reacts to it.
