We will start reading Lord of the Flies, next. Here is the essay prompt you will address when we have finished with the book: Lord of the Flies is an allegory about a group of British school boys who find themselves stranded on an uninhabited island. Over the course of the novel, they devolve into savages. One of the symbols in the novel is a conch. Its purpose is to serve as a gage of the boys' descent into cannibalism. The way the conch is described and the way the boys treat it are signs of how uncivilized they are becoming. Trace the conch throughout the novel and show how it acts as a gage for the reader.

As with the last two novels, please keep a log of quotations relating to the essay prompt (three from the beginning of the novel, three from the middle, and three from the end.) Use the exact same format we used for the last two logs. You will submit your completed log with your essay. The due date of the essay will be determined after you finish the book. The book should be finished by March 18.
