The Attendance Office is located in the Main Building (A Building), next to the Welcome Center. All absences from school, whether for a single period or for several days, are handled through the Attendance Office. Parents are encouraged to monitor their student's attendance on Parent Portal.

Attendance Procedures:
Children are expected to arrive to school on time daily. Please become familiar with your child’s school bell schedule. Showing up for school has an impact on a student’s academic success starting in Kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life. We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. However, we also know that when students miss too much school, or are consistently picked up prior to the end of the school day, regardless of the reason, it can cause them to fall behind academically.

Please feel free to contact the attendance office staff, Intervention Advisor/School Counselor, or your school administrator should you have any questions regarding school attendance.

Reporting Absences:
How do I report my child’s absence? It is the parent’s responsibility to inform the school when the child is absent.

When students who have been absent return to school, they must present a satisfactory explanation verifying the reason for the absence. The following methods may be used to verify student absences:
  1. Written note from parent/guardian, parent representative, or student if 18 or older (Education Code 46012) a. The note should include the student’s legal name, student ID number, reason for the absence, and the exact date(s) of absence.
  2. Conversation, in person or by telephone, between the verifying employee and the student's parent/guardian or parent representative.
  3. Visit to the student's home by the verifying employee, or any other reasonable method, which establishes the fact that the student was absent for the reasons stated. A written recording shall be made, including information outlined above.
  4. Physician's verification
A student who has been absent from school and has been treated by a medical physician for an illness/injury may present evidence of such treatment as verification of absence. The note must be written on office/clinic/hospital letterhead which includes the address and phone number of the place of treatment and include the following:
  1. Name of student
  2. Date or dates of absence
  3. Date of appointment
  4. Date of return to school
  5. Signature or stamp of the treating health professional.

Tardies
If a child is late, the child should bring an excuse from home to the school office. Frequent tardiness without a valid excuse is considered truancy under state law.

Alhambra Unified Board Attendance Policy
EC 48205. Per AUSD Board Policy 5113:
  1. A student is allowed 10 days of excused absences due to illness in the school year.
  2. Each absence beyond 10 days must be verified by a health professional, and the parent will not be allowed to write a note to excuse absences beyond the 10 days.
  3. Parents have 10 calendar days to provide a valid reason to excuse an absence. If a valid reason is not provided within the 10 days, the absence is considered “unexcused”. State law declares a student truant when the student is tardy three times for more than 30 minutes each time, or if the student has 3 unexcused absences.
  4. Parents of children with health issues or a chronic illness may complete a release of information form which authorized the school nurse to speak with the child’s doctor about the child’s health issues and how they impact school attendance.

California Education Attendance Code
TRUANCY- EC 48260, 48262 and 48263.6
A student with three (3) or more unexcused absences or tardies in excess of thirty (30) minutes, or a combination of the two, in one school year is deemed truant. A student who is absent from school without a valid excuse for 10% or more of the school days in a school year, from the date of enrollment to the current date, is considered a chronic truant. After three unexcused absences, the student may be referred to the School Attendance Review Team (SART). If no improvement is noted, the student will then be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB), and/or the District Attorney/Court for prosecution. Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically truant (missing 10% or 18 or more days over the course of an entire year).

(1) Due to the pupil's illness.
(2) Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer.
(3) For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometrical, or chiropractic services rendered.

(5) For the purpose of jury duty in the manner provided for by law.
(6) Due to the illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent.

(8) For the purpose of serving as a member of a precinct board for an election pursuant to Section 12302 of the Elections Code.
(9) For the purpose of spending time with a member of the pupil's immediate family, who is an active duty member of the uniformed services, as defined in Section 49701, and has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from, deployment to a combat zone or combat support position. (b) A pupil absent from school under this section shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can be reasonably provided and, upon satisfactory completion within a reasonable period of time, shall be given full credit therefor. The teacher of the class from which a pupil is absent shall determine which tests and assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments that the pupil missed during the absence.
(c) For purposes of this section, attendance at religious retreats shall not exceed four hours per semester.
(d) Absences pursuant to this section are deemed to be absences in computing average daily attendance and shall not generate state apportionment payments.
(e) "Immediate family," as used in this section, has the same meaning as set forth in Section 45194, except that references therein to "employee" shall be deemed to be references to "pupil."
(Amended by Stats. 2016, Ch. 92, Sec. 1.)

UNEXCUSED absences include, but are not limited to:
  • Family vacation
  • Outings or extending holidays
  • Sporting events
  • Appointments with the DMV
  • Political rallies
